Chapter 2 : AGI
Artificial general intelligence (AGI) is a hypothetical type
of artificial intelligence (AI) that would have the ability to understand or
learn any intellectual task that a human being can. AGI is sometimes referred
to as strong AI, full AI, or general intelligent action.
AGI is a long-term goal of many AI researchers, but it is
still a long way off. Current AI systems are mostly "narrow AI"
systems, which are designed to solve a specific problem or task. For example,
there are AI systems that can play chess, translate languages, or diagnose
diseases. However, these systems are not able to generalize their knowledge to
other tasks.
AGI would need to be able to learn and understand
information from the real world in a way that is similar to how humans do. It
would also need to be able to reason and solve problems in a way that is
creative and flexible.
There are many challenges that need to be overcome before
AGI can be achieved. One challenge is the need for large amounts of data. AGI
systems would need to be trained on massive datasets of text, images, and other
information. Another challenge is the need for more powerful hardware. AGI
systems would need to be able to process information at very high speeds.
Despite the challenges, there is a growing belief that AGI
is possible. Some experts believe that AGI could be achieved within the next
few decades. Others believe that it may take longer, but that it is inevitable.
The development of AGI would have a profound impact on
society. AGI systems could be used to solve some of the world's most pressing
problems, such as climate change, poverty, and disease. However, there are also
concerns about the potential risks of AGI, such as the possibility of job
displacement or the development of superintelligence.
The development of AGI is a complex and challenging task,
but it is one that has the potential to change the world in profound ways. It
is important to have a thoughtful and informed discussion about the potential
benefits and risks of AGI so that we can be prepared for the future.
There still remains a school of thought who agree that for AGI to develop the set of algorithms may need a body to be able to tap into all our 5 senses before it can develop into proper AGI befitting Sci-fi thrillers. Once AGI is achieved, nothing on paper stops it from developing itself by the process of reiteration and evolve into ASI. This is the next race in artificial intelligence. Some scientists have termed this as an intelligence explosion. I will go deeper into ASI and intelligence explosion in the next chapter. It is likely that AGI is developed by a financial institution where it has found most of AIs use. But, at the same time lot of top notch universities had been funded with a singular goal of achieving AGI. However there still remains a school of thought who are pointing at the dystopian future it may give rise to a real possibility. Big names in technology already called for AI development to be regulated. But, in reality the race is on, if not one part of the world certainly others would be on the way to develop it. We might as well be staring at a 'skynet' like entity from the movie series 'Terminator'.

capable of doing more and more tasks that are currently done by humans.

AGI could lead to the development of superintelligence,
which could pose an existential threat to humanity.
It is important to have a thoughtful and informed discussion
about the potential benefits and risks of AGI so that we can be prepared for
the future.
